About Martin County

Nestled in the beautiful hills of eastern Kentucky, Martin County lies in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains along the Kentucky-West Virginia Border.  Martin County is a vibrant and dedicated community where neighbors still help neighbors and where friendship, family, and God are still valued.  The 115th county formed in Kentucky, Martin County was named for Colonel John P. Martin, a state senator from the area.  Martin County’s abundance of resources and diversity of skills create an exciting quality of life.  The labor of our coal miners helped to build the industry of our great nation.  Additional chief resources include oil, natural gas, and hardwood timber.

Our proud past includes noteworthy basketball, wrestling and football teams.  We place a priority on our children.  Our motto is “New Commitments for a New Century.”  Martin County citizens are continuing our legacy of preserving all that makes small town America great as, together, we work toward creating an even brighter future full of opportunities and hope.
